Direct School Admission (DSA)

Edgefield Secondary School invites Primary 6 students to join the school in Secondary One 2020 through the 2019 Direct School Admission – Secondary (DSA-Sec) Exercise. Interested candidates can apply for DSA through the school’s distinctive programmes:

Applied Learning Programme (ALP):  ENTREPRENEURSHIP

Student Leadership Development:     LEADERSHIP

Learning for Life Programme (LLP):   TAEKWONDO (TKD)

1.    ENTREPRENEURSHIP - Growing an Entrepreneurial Mindset

Student Outcomes:

·         Nurturing Collaborative Innovators who are able to translate problems into opportunities.

Selection Criteria

·         Displays strong passion and keen interest in developing skills and attributes in the areas of innovation and entrepreneurship.

·         Exhibits aptitude in high performance capability in creativity and problem-solving, and displays high level of self-motivation and self-directedness.

·         Demonstrates willingness and openness to attempt and experiment with new and challenging ideas, and alertness to opportunities.

·         Active involvement/participation in innovation and entrepreneurship programmes/competitions in their primary schools or has similar experiences in 

          other  platforms.

·         Personal traits and values that will help nurture an entrepreneurial mindset.

Shortlisted candidates will be required to attend:

(i)            A Situational Test where they will be put into a problem-solving scenario and generate plausible solutions within the given time,

(ii)           An interview session.

To better support successful DSA candidates in developing their areas of passion, he/she would join Entrepreneur Club as his/her Co-Curricular Activity (CCA) for the duration of his/her studies in Edgefield Secondary School.

2.    LEADERSHIP - Nurturing Compassionate Leaders

Student Outcomes

·         Nurturing Compassionate Leaders who are anchored on values.

·         Developing Leaders who are committed to serve the school and the community with passion and empathy through “Lead”, “Care” and “Inspire”.

Selection Criteria

·         Demonstrates the values Compassion, Moral Courage, Sincerity and Honour.

·         Exhibits strong leadership qualities and has held a leadership position in primary school, e.g. Class Chairpersons/Monitors, Prefects/Counsellors, CCA 

         leaders/Captains, etc.

·         Attended and completed school or external trainings in leadership, facilitation, mentoring, and project management skills, and were given opportunities to 

          put these skills into practices through meaningful contributions to the school and the community.

·         Obtained “Very Good” or “Excellent” in conduct grade in Primary 5 and Primary 6.

Shortlisted candidates will be required to attend:

(i)             A Situational Test where they will be put into a problem-solving scenario to work with other students to exhibit leadership traits within the given time,

(ii)           A Grit Test to assess candidates’ passion and perseverance,

(iii)          An interview session.

To better support successful DSA candidates in developing their areas of passion, he/she would have to serve in one of the Student Leadership bodies for the duration of his/her studies in Edgefield Secondary School.

3.    TAEKWONDO (TKD)

Student Outcomes

·         To develop good character and a resilient mindset in our students through TKD.

·         To develop and nurture sporting talents in TKD.

Selection Criteria

·         Obtained “Very Good” or “Excellent” in conduct grade in Primary 5 and Primary 6.

·         Exhibits aptitude in general athletic abilities and/or sports-specific competencies, and displays high levels of motivation and grit.

·         Candidates with participation and achievements in TKD, including competitions at zonal, national and/or international levels, will be considered more 

          favourably.

Shortlisted candidates will be required to attend:

(i)    A TKD trial (do come in TKD dobok or in track pants for the trial)

a.   Mandatory requirement - Agility and Flexibility test,

b.   Optional requirement (if applicable):

·         Demonstrating poomsae pattern of their grade level,

·         For students with Kyorugi background, they are to perform a short sparring session with a Sec 1 TKD member of the same gender in similar weight 

         category.

(ii)   An interview session

To better support successful DSA candidates in developing their areas of passion, he/she would join TKD Club as his/her Co-Curricular Activity (CCA) for the duration of his/her studies in Edgefield Secondary School.

APPLICATION PROCESS

1.    The application period is from 8 May 2019, 9.00am to 4 Jun 2019, 3.00pm.

2.    From 2019, application for DSA-Sec can be submitted through the online DSA-Sec Portal. The application is free-of-charge and will be open from 8 May to 4 Jun 2019. For more details, please refer to MOE website – www.moe.gov.sg/admissions/direct-admissions/dsa-sec.

SELECTION PROCESS

1.    Shortlisted candidates will be notified latest by 19 July 2019.

2.    Shortlisted candidates will be required to sit for the required situational/grit assessments or sports trial, and interview sessions as specified under the different distinctive programmes.

3.    Please note that shortlisted candidates will have to attend separate sessions of situational/grit assessments / trials & interviews if they have applied for more than one talent areas.

4.    The situational/grit assessments / trials & interviews for shortlisted candidates will be conducted between 1 July 2019 and 7 August 2019, at Edgefield Secondary School.

5.    Shortlisted candidates will receive notification of results (by post) by 30 August 2019.

Situational/grit Assessments / Trials & Interviews

Shortlisted candidates will be required to sit for situational/grit assessments / trials & interviews between 1 July 2019 and 7 August 2019.

Release of result

Shortlisted candidates will receive notification of results (by post) by 30 August 2019.

Exercise School Preference (through primary schools)

Students to indicate up to three school preferences from 21 Oct 2019, 9.00am – 25 Oct 2019, 3.00pm.

ESSENTIAL INFORMATION

1.    Candidates who are currently NOT studying in MOE mainstream schools are to obtain a Registration Number (RGxxxxxxx) at MOE Customer Service Centre (CSC) from 8 May 2019, 9.00am to 4 Jun 2019, 3.00pm before they can apply through the DSA-Sec Portal. Refer to MOE website at:

2.    All International Students are to take part in the Admissions Exercise for International Students (AEIS) before they are considered for DSA-Sec allocation. For more information on AEIS, please refer to the website: https://www.moe.gov.sg/admissions/international-students/admissions-exercise.

3.    For successful applicants not studying in MOE mainstream primary schools and not taking the PSLE, the school will conduct placement tests to assess the course suitability of the applicants.

4.    Parents and students are encouraged to choose schools wisely based on the student’s aptitudes and strengths, bearing in mind the schools’ academic and non-academic requirements, and the programmes available to develop the area of talent.

5.    The school’s decision of the DSA-Sec application is final. No appeal or correspondence will be entertained.

6.    The school reserves the right not to disclose the reasons for the non-selection of applicants.

7.    Successful DSA-Sec candidates who took PSLE are NOT allowed to participate in the annual Secondary One (S1) Posting Exercise. However, if they are eligible for third language and/or course options, they may enter these options during the S1 Option Submission period.

8.    Successful DSA-Sec candidates are NOT allowed to transfer to another school after the release of the PSLE results. They are expected to honour the commitment to the posted DSA schools for the duration of the programme they are admitted to.
