Mother Tongue Language Programmes & Activities



Chinese Calligraphy and Painting class was conducted for all 320 pupils as part of the Mother Tongue Fortnight Activity. The course aims to cultivate students’ interest and appreciation of Chinese Arts. Students completed 5 hours of training and acquired both theory and practical skills.

Edgefield National Chinese Cultural Camp 2016

Edgefield Secondary School’s Mother Tongue Department co-organised the National Chinese Cultural Camp with the Singapore Literature Society (新加坡文艺协会), to promote reading of the great literary works of the four Chinese Classics.

The keynote speakers included local film director Mr Royston Tan and Media veteran personality Mr Zhuang Yong Kang.



The objective of activity is to spark the love for the language and uncover the students’ cultural roots through the exhibition in the centre.

Every year, the Year 1 Malay Language cohort participated in a Wayang Kulit Workshop as one of the Mother Tongue Language Fortnight activities. The objective of the workshop is to introduce and expose them to a form of Malay traditional arts performance. The students will participate in a step by step instructions of creating a puppet.  At the end of the 1 hour 30 minutes session, they are expected to know the steps well so that they can create the puppets of the characters that they have chosen from their reading texts.

Setiap tahun, para pelajar kohort Tahun Pertama Bahasa Melayu telah melibatkan diri dalam Bengkel Wayang Kulit sebagai salah satu aktiviti Dwi-Mingguan
Bahasa Ibunda. Objektif bengkel ini diadakan adalah untuk memperkenalkan dan mendedahkan kepada para pelajar salah satu bentuk seni persembahan Melayu. Pelajar akan mengikuti arahan langkah demi langkah dalam mencipta boneka wayang kulit. Di akhir sesi satu jam 30 minit, mereka dijangkakan untuk mengetahui langkah-langkah tersebut dengan baik agar mereka dapat mencipta boneka bagi watak-watak daripada bahan bacaan mereka nanti.


On the 8th February 2019, Malay language students from the Secondary 3 Express and Normal Academic cohort went on a guided tour visit of the Malay Heritage Centre at Kampung Glam. There they learnt the roots of the Malay community in Singapore as well as the significance of the Malay monarchy back in the early years of Singapore.

Darmawisata ke Taman Warisan Melayu

Pada tanggal 8hb Februari 2019, pelajar Bahasa Melayu daripada kohort menengah 3 Ekspres dan Normal Akademik telah berdarmawisata ke Taman Warisan Melayu di Kampung Glam. Di sana, mereka telah mempelajari asal-usul masyarakat Melayu Singapura serta mengenali kerajaan awal tanah Singapura.

Arts Performance - Xinyao Appreciation Performance

On 27 Feb 2019, Edgefield Secondary School was privileged to host the first Xinyao appreciation show “新空下”. The 新空下 National Schools Xinyao Singing and Songwriting competition 2019 was organised by the “Committee to Promote Chinese Language Learning (CPCLL) Culture Group”, to ignite students’ passion in Chinese Language learning and to preserve our cultural heritage. Students were treated with performances of various Xinyao Songs and local compositions, which dated back in the 1970s to the present. Our Vice-Principal, Mr Tan Chai Hok, was very sporting to sing to the lyrics of one of the all-time favourite Xinyao Song “ 我们这一班”, which won resounding applause from the student audience. After the session, one of our students even expressed interest to start songwriting and shared how he has benefited from the programme.  

 “新空下”全国学生新谣歌唱比赛在 2 月 27 日在育德中学展开首场音乐分享会,希望通过演出激 发学生对新谣的兴趣。弹唱人新生代歌手昨为育德中学为中一中二生演唱 10 多首新谣,如《新加坡派》、浪漫情歌《邂逅》、新谣金曲《星空下》等名作。我们的陈副校长也即兴在场哼出几句新谣歌曲《我们这一班》,赢得全场学生的喝彩。 虽然学生听众看似对新谣不太熟悉,但演出的最后一首歌《细水长流》引起不少共鸣,也有学生起劲地跟着唱。

Keppel Nights!

Edgefield Secondary School is honoured to be one of the partnering school with Keppel Corporation for students to attend Keppel Nights - a programme to give students access to world-class performances at the Esplanade Theatre. This year, Edgefield Secondary School brought 20 students to the Esplanade Theatre to catch a Mandarin performance titled "The Tragedy of Hamlet, Prince of Denmark". For many of the students, it was their maiden experience to be exposed to Mandarin theatre performance!


Arts Theatre Production - 1965: Geylang Serai


12 Malay Language students went to Wisma Geylang Serai to watch a local musical production entitled “1965 Geylang Serai”. The objective of the show is to expose the Malay Language students to creative arts performance, appreciate the classical Malay language and understand the past experiences of the Geylang Serai residents.

The musical show showcased songs from the old genre such as Pop Yeh Yeh and acted an old setting of Geylang Serai. The students enjoyed the humour, Pop Yeh songs and storyline of the whole musical, which lasted for 45 minutes. Most importantly, they learnt about the value of unity and the culture of gotong royong among the occupants of Geylang Serai during post-war period.

12 pelajar Bahasa Melayu telah diundang oleh Wisma Geylang Serai untuk menonton persembahan musikal bertajuk 1965: Geylang Serai. Objektif persembahan tersebut adalah untuk mendedahkan para pelajar Bahasa Melayu kepada seni persembahan kreatif, menghargai Bahasa Melayu Klasik dan juga untuk memahami pengalaman lama para penduduk Geylang Serai.

Persembahan muzikal tersebut memaparkan genre lagu lama seperti Pop Yeh dan menggambarkan suasana Geylang Serai pada masa lampau. Para pelajar berasa teruja dan seronok menonton persembahan yang diiringi dengan senda gurau, lagu-lagu Pop Yeh serta jalan cerita pementasan yang berlangsung selama 45 minit, Yang paling penting, mereka mempelajari tentang nilai perpaduan dan budaya gotong royong yang diamalkan oleh penduduk-penduduk Geylang Serai selepas pos-peperangan.

Malay Puppetry (Wayang Kulit) Workshop


Introduce and expose students to a form of Malay traditional arts performance.

The students participated in a workshop, where they followed a series of steps to create puppets!


Two crosstalk performers presented a wonderful performance to all sec 2 students studying Chinese Language on 5 March 2019. The performance was entitled “Laughing Out Loud in School”. The two performers brought laughter to students and also helped them to develop more interest in Chinese language and culture.

2019 MTL Display Booths

In Semester 1, 2019, the MTL department put up information on the MTL Programmes and Activities conducted by the department. Students' works and writings were also on display at the foyer. The department organised a MTL Quiz for students.

In Semester 2, 2019, the MTL department put up the Malay puppetry booth, Chinese booth, Kueh Kueh booth as well as information on the 2018 Brunei Twinning Programme which was anchored by the department. When the staff and students from our twinning school (SM SMJA) visited Edgefield Secondary School, they also visited the booths.

Tang Poem Recital by VP Mr Tan 2019

VP Mr Tan recited a Tang Poem entitled “Climbing White Stork Tower” written by Chinese poet Wang Zhihuan during morning assembly. He reiterated the importance of bilingualism and the benefits of being bilingual. VP Mr Tan shared his own experiences when he went on an overseas attachment programme in China in 2016 and also when he led the school team on the visit to Brunei in 2018 (School Twining Programme).

Edgefield Secondary School Selected for Twinning School Partnership!

Edgefield Secondary School is pleased to be selected by MOE Singapore  as a twinning school with SM SMJA (Sekolah Menengah Sultan Muhammad Jamalul Alam). The programme was anchored by the MTL Department.

Lunar New Year Hamper Making 2019

The Lunar New Year 2019 Celebrations on 4 February 2019 at EFSS had two segments namely the Hamper Making Competition which was be held in the respective classrooms for the students and the Lunar New Year Concert which will be held in the hall. In addition, staff were also involved in the hamper making. Prior to this, school personnel led by VP Mr Tan had a co-ordination meeting with personnel from the Active Ageing Committee from Punggol West. VP Mr Tan and Mr Lye Nyap Hiang, teacher in charge of the Hamper Making by staff and students, went to an event organised for the residents in the Punggol Area and interacted with them. The hampers made by the staff and students were presented to the needy families in the Punggol Area. Drama Performance at the Gateway Theatre

100 students and 6 teachers watched a drama performance entitled, “Flying with books” at the Gateway Theatre on 22 August 2019. (photos below)

Tea Appreciation Workshop on 26 October 2019

40 students from different streams and races experienced the art of brewing Chinese tea. The students also were brought on a historical journey on the origins of tea. (photos below)
